Functional Medicine Coaching Academy Health Coaching Program

The Functional Medicine Health Coaching Academy (FMCA) is a health coaching program established in collaboration with The Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM). The Functional Medicine Health Coaching program offers a curriculum that blends the principles of Functional Medicine with positive psychology coaching skills and mind-body medicine. The program includes a supervised practicum and is taught by IFM faculty and leaders in positive psychology coaching. The program is an Approved Transition Program per the ICHWC standards. Health and wellness coaches who have met ICHWC’s requirements and completed the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy, Inc. program will qualify to sit for the ICHWC exam.

The Functional Medicine Coaching Academy curriculum integrates the art of coaching with principles of Functional Medicine, nutrition, the psychology of eating, mind-body medicine and positive psychology. Continued development of coaching core competencies within this context is emphasized. Learning centers around case studies and personal exploration. We emphasize practical application of concepts so that you graduate with the knowledge, skills and confidence to apply these concepts effectively.

Monthly modules consist of webinars and interviews with Institute for Functional Medicine faculty and certified practitioners, experts in mind-body medicine and positive psychology, and leaders in coaching. Content is delivered through webinars and activities on Canvas, a cloud-based learning management system. Modules are released monthly and students may work at their own pace to complete discussions, quizzes, case studies, and assignments. The program is one year long. In the first half of the program, content is focused on theory and core competencies. In the second half, there are less webinars and the focus shifts to the completion of the practicum. The Functional Medicine Coaching Academy has the benefit of providing a Coaching Center in which clients enroll for coaching sessions by students. Practicum supervision is also required and students must attend 10 of 12 supervision sessions. A final case study is presented at the end of the practicum. Students will also complete a final exam.

Learning Objectives:

1. Continued development of fundamental coaching competencies as set forth by the International Consortium for Health and Wellness Coaches (ICHWC).
2. Meet Professional and Ethical Standards, as set forth by the International Consortium for Health and Wellness Coaches (ICHWC).
3. Demonstrate effective use of the positive psychology model of coaching to engage clients and inspire them to initiate and sustain lifestyle changes.
4. Demonstrate understanding of Functional Medicine (FM) and apply it as a theoretical framework to educate and guide clients.
5. Demonstrate understanding of functional nutrition and know how to appropriately use the various food plans.
6. Acquire knowledge of psychology of eating principles to help clients understand the myriad influences on their food choices and eating behaviors.
7. Incorporate a variety of mind-body techniques and be able to personalize them for clients.

Brain Based Coaching

Through the ‘Science of the Art of Coaching’ (SAC) programme, Professor Paul Brown introduces Coaches to:
– The modern neuroscientific understandings about how the brain works;
– How energy is created and directed;
– What the emotional bases of motivation are;
– How an appreciation of the interpersonal neurobiology of the coaching encounter can be managed in pursuit of the client’s coaching goals;
– The neurobiological bases of stress: how stress can be managed through perceptual shifts and awareness.

The SAC has been designed for Coaches, Organisational Consultants or Business Leaders who wish to incorporate knowledge from neuroscience to enhance coaching conversations and organisational outcomes.

Front-loaded with knowledge, the programme becomes increasingly experiential, and ends with tackling some of the more difficult stress-related circumstances of the senior executive life.

Developing the skill of mindfulness is the key to being a masterful coach. Applying mindfulness to the coaching conversation increases your ability to have deeper more impactful conversations that provide greater value to your clients.

Developing mindfulness will give you a greater ability to:

Connect with the client and establish a deeper level of trust and intimacy,
Use powerful questions and clarification to create awareness,
Clarify the underlying themes or patterns in the coaching conversation,
Listen at a deeper level for the subtle nuances in the conversation,
Use intuition to create awareness,
Connect with your own style of coaching,
Communicate clearly with the client,
Feel more relaxed and confident coaching, and
Ensure the client feels truly heard at a deep level.

The unique part of this online program is that it is interactive in a small group based learning environment. We include a weekly call via zoom video conferencing with a maximum of 16 participants, so you can share your insights, challenges and receive the support of a group. Mindfulness takes time to develop and we often need someone to guide us on the journey, so this program provides that extra support through the group calls and mentoring. You also will be connecting with other participants from around the world, in between the group calls.

Included in the program:
• 9 webinars x 1.5 hours each plus optional 30 minutes group mentoring after each call
• Mindfulness practices on audio and in transcript
• Audio coaching conversations to listen to and learn from
• Workbook and reading materials to guide you through the program
• Practice with partners between calls
• Observed session feedback
• 1 x individual mentoring session
• Weekly articles and inspiration
• Online group to share insights, information and ask questions
• 24 hours ICF Coach Continuing Education CCEU in Core Competencies

These aspiring and new entrepreneurs include Baby Boomers who are retiring and starting their own “encore career” businesses. According to a Gallup poll, as high as 83% of baby boomers are starting “encore careers.” (Business Journal, 2015) Additional research reveals that many new businesses fail because the new entrepreneur attempts to do everything himself, without help or support. The areas of goal setting, designing actions, monitoring, and accountability are of particular vulnerability for aspiring and new x-Preneurs. Having a knowledgeable coach may be the best source of professional development to avoid failure rates of nearly half of businesses within five years and 66% within ten years. The EQ-i 2.0® Experience

The EQ-i 2.0® Certification Program is a blended learning solution that enables participants to do parts of the program online, together with a 2-day interactive in-class component. Through completing the EQ-i 2.0® Certification Program with a CPP Asia Pacific expert facilitator, you will:

– Obtain an in-depth understanding of the instrument through first hand experience

– Learn how to apply the instrument in organisational and individual development initiatives

– EQ-i 2.0® and EQ 360 Workbook
– EQ-i 2.0® Workplace Report

Why the EQ-i 2.0® Instrument?

Emotional intelligence is a set of emotional and social skills that influence the way we perceive and express ourselves, develop and maintain social relationships, cope with challenges and use emotional information in an effective and meaningful way.

The EQ-i 2.0® instrument builds on the success and insights of the BarOn EQ-i® instrument by introducing an updated model of emotional intelligence.

It introduces some differences that stem from changes, based on extensive feedback, to assessment items, updated norms and rigorous reliability and validity studies.

The EQ-i 2.0® Model:

The EQ-i 2.0® and EQ-360™ instruments measure emotional intelligence (EI) and how it can impact people and the workplace. The 1-5-15 factor structure the EQ-i 2.0® features is one overarching EI score (Total EI), broken down into five composite scores which, in turn, are broken down into a total of 15 subscales.

Applications of Emotional Intelligence:

– Leadership development
– Selection
– Organisational development
– Executive coaching
– Team building
– Student development

While emotional intelligence is not the sole predictor of human performance and development potential, it is proven to be a key indicator in these areas. Emotional intelligence is not a static factor – to the contrary, one’s emotional intelligence changes over time and can be developed in targeted areas.

Event Description:

The Shift Positive 360 is a narrative 360 approach used by executive and leadership coaches. This approach is grounded in positive psychology and focuses on engaging the client’s “people system” throughout the change process. Positive psychology is the study of human strengths and well-being which employs proven methods to promote the flourishing of people, organizations, and communities. The client’s “people system” is the group of people who participate in the 360 and become allies in the client’s change.

A two-day certification is available with two Hudson Institute PCC level coaches, Pete Berridge and Jen Ostrich. Pete combines 30 years of HR and leadership experience with a Masters in Applied Positive Psychology and created the Shift+ 360 process five years ago to use in his own executive coaching practice. Jen brings 15 years of navigating people systems across the advertising industry to create positive results, and has used the Shift+ 360 exclusively for the last three years in her leadership coaching business.
